No Ifs, Ands, or Butts: Warcraft’s New Blood Elves

Apart from setting the stage for the Warlords of Dreanor expansion pack, World of Warcraft‘s Patch 6 included the hotly anticipated character reskins that would take the denizen’s of Azeroth out of their 2004 skin and into something considerably more defined and aesthetically pleasing. The initial patch changed the base races, with the remaining models – like my Blood Elf – coming later. There is no formal release date for the new update, but Blizzard offered a preview of the upcoming male and female Blood Elf reskins. And judging by the image below, it looks like the ladies of Quel’Thalas are all about that bass.

I have to ask: is the pronounced butt really necessary? As much as I appreciate the female form, the new design is odd. Why spend the time on butt implants and a thong when it’s only going to be covered up by armor? Unless you’re having an underwear dance party in the Undercity or Ogrimmar, there’s no reason to wander around with your ass hanging out. And why just focus on the butt? Why not go the distance and give her bigger tits? I’m not trying to cause trouble; I just don’t understand the need for sexing up a lady parts that you won’t see under normal playing conditions. What is this in service to? Players who get their kicks role playing sexy times under the light of the Durotar moonlight? Blizzard can do whatever they want with their game, but with heightened sensitivity towards the representation of women in video games, this leaves me scratching my head.

Criticisms aside, the new textures are quite good, especially in the faces and hairstyles. The increased definition and detail looks fantastic.  For comparison purposes, here is the male Blood Elf reskin.
